Iowa Licensing Qualifications

An applicant for a real estate salesperson license must:

• Be 18 years of age - no residency or citizenship requirement.

• Complete the 60-hours pre-license course from an approved provider.

• Successfully pass the state and national portions of the examination; passing notice good for six months.

• Provide errors and omissions insurance (no cost to Mel Foster Co. agents).

• Be sponsored by a Broker upon passing the exam; cannot apply for an inactive license.

• Get your fingerprints taken and sent in for a government background check. Information can be found online at www.iowarealtors.com.

License issued and mailed to sponsoring Broker within 7-10 days of passing exam.  

The State of Iowa also requires an additional 36 hours of education prior to obtaining your license.  These classes expand on the basics of real estate and start you on your way to understanding everything you need to know about a career in real estate.  Mel Foster Co. offers these classes FREE to our associates!  The classes are 12 hours each of Buying Practices, Listing Practices, and Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices.
